NEW YORK -- Holiday procrastinators packed stores Friday morning, grabbing those last few presents, snagging gift cards and the finishing touches for Christmas dinner. For stores, this 11th-hour dash caps the best holiday season since 2007, and possibly the best ever. With Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, Friday is a holiday for most workers. That allowed shoppers to hit the stores first thing in the morning. "I'm calling it Fantastic Friday, because I really do think it's going to be one of the busiest days of the year," said Marshal Cohen, chief fashion industry analyst with researcher NPD Group.
The day Before Christmas is an excellent time to stock up for next year on items such as gift wrap, ornaments and other decorations. Most stores will start slashing prices to at least 50 percent Sunday, and inventories will sell quickly. Items such as TVs, clothes and electronics can most likely be found cheaper if you wait. Many shopping analysts peg Black Friday or the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl as the best time to find a deal on a TV, so shop for your new LCD, LED or plasma TV then. The best deals on clothes can be found after the New Year as retailers begin clearing out winter items for spring inventory.
